Creating General Use Custom Pages

With your Zenfolio account, we offer Custom Pages that can be used to fulfill the general needs of a photography website. Custom Pages are highly customizable, even down to the HTML level, so you can use it to communicate a message to your clients outside of your gallery pages.

Here are just a few examples of how Custom Pages can be used:


Custom Pages are a blank slate. With the exception of elements displayed on your entire site, such as the Header and Footer, the entire content area of the custom page is available for you to display your information.

You are free to create the entire content on the page through our built in Custom Page interface, or by manual coding the HTML code of the content area of the page. While you do have the option to manually code your pages, the code itself cannot be supported through our customer support.

Create a Custom Page

  1. In the Dashboard, hover the mouse pointer over Website then click on Custom Pages.
  2. Click Create New.

  1. Enter the Title - In the Title field enter the name of your page. A Friendly URL will be generated in the URL field that can be used for linking from external webpages.
  2. Check/Uncheck Allow indexing by search engines -  If your content is useful to visitors and will help with Search Engine Optimization, we highly recommend leaving this checked.
  3. Enter your desired text into the Content field.
  4. Use the tools in the formatting toolbar to control the format of the text.  These tools can also be used to add Photos, Slideshows, Videos and embeddable HTML content.
  5. Enter your META description in the text field. Your META Description is used by search engines to help catalogue your web page correctly.Adding a useful description or keywords will help with Search Engine Optimization (SEO).It is not seen by visitors on the page but it can be seen by visitors when viewing the page in a search result.
  6. Click Save to save your changes or click Save and Preview to save and review your Custom Page.

If you would like to control the placement of text and other elements in the custom page, you'll need to use a table to design the layout of the page.

First, create a table and then you can create as many cells inside the table as needed. Then inside each cell, you can add a variety of media - text, photos, videos, embeddable slideshows, and other embeddable items. By right-clicking on the table, you will also be able to customize its properties such as border size, header, caption etc...

It may take a bit of experimentation, but this is generally the easiest way to align and organize different items on a custom page.

Formatting Text in the Custom Page

To choose the font and font styles applied to the text in the custom page, the formatting toolbar can be used to apply different fonts and font styles to text in the custom page.

However, there are not very many font options available when using the formatting toolbar. To choose from many more font options, it is better not to use the font and font styling options in the formatting toolbar.  Instead, the fonts and font styles in the theme applied to the custom page can be used for this purpose.

Themes control the fonts and fonts styles applied to the pages in the Zenfolio site. The photographer is also given the option to create their own custom themes where they can choose the fonts applied to the different types of text displayed in their site.

In the custom page formatting toolbar, the photographer can designate the format of the text in the custom page. For example, they can designate that the text is Heading 1, Heading 2, Normal text, etc.

Meanwhile, in the custom theme, the photographer can apply different fonts and font styles to the text in the theme based on the format of the text.

When a format is designated for the text, the text will utilize the font and font styles applied to that format as designated in the custom theme applied to the page.

In the screenshots above, the Normal format was applied to the text and it will now use the font and font styles designated for the Normal Text element in the custom theme.

Here are all of the formats and their corresponding elements in the Theme Designer. The elements listed can all be found under the Style tab.

Important Note: if a font style is applied to the text using the formatting toolbar, the font style in the theme will not apply to the text. That means that if a specific font is applied to the text using the formatting toolbar in the custom theme creation page, the font applied to that text element from the custom theme will not apply to the text.

Similarly, if the text was pasted into the custom page content window with a font style applied, the font style in the theme will also not apply to the text.
 
The text must not have any formatting applied to the text for the theme font styles to apply. The Clear Format tool in the formatting toolbar can be used to easily remove any formatting introduced from cutting and pasting,



​Customize the Custom Page Presentation

Once the page has been created, it will still need to be customized. Like all the other pages in your site, Custom Pages will be customized from a selection of Themes and Options. 

  1. In the Dashboard, hover the mouse pointer over Website then click on Custom Pages.
  2. Click Customize next to the Custom page you want to customize.

The page will refresh with a new customization menu at the top and a yellow outline around the page, confirming that you are in the customization mode. From here you can go to Theme to change the theme applied to this page or go to Options to Show or Hide various page elements.

Add a link to the Custom Page to the Site Menu

In order for the Custom Page to be accessible to your site visitors, you must add the page to the Site Menu.  That is done through Customize Website View.

  1. Once in Customize Website View, click on +New next to Edit Site Menu.
  2. Enter the desired title for the new menu item then click Enter or Return on your keyboard.
  3. Mark the circle for Built in or Custom page.
  4. Using the Select a page to link to drop down menu, choose the desired Custom Page.
  5. Click Update to close the Edit Menu Item Window
  6. Click Publish before exiting Customize Website View to make those changes live on your site.
