Video guidelines

Video clips may be uploaded and hosted through your account. These are converted to use the H.264 codec, so they may be viewed on all major platforms. The original video files are removed from the server, so we recommend you save any important video content.

Like Photos, Videos are uploaded to and stored in galleries.  See this link for how to upload Videos to your galleries.

The downloading of your videos are disabled by default but it can be enabled for specific galleries if desired.

Please see this link for information on allowing visitors to download videos and this link for more information on selling videos.

Supported file formats and codecs

Video can be uploaded in almost any format: asf, asx, avi, divx, dv, dvx, m4v, mov, mp4, mpeg, mpg, qt, wmv, 3g2, 3gp, 3ivx and 3vx.

We also support all major codecs, converting them to H.264. If for some reason your video clip cannot be processed, please use the Contact Us form for more assistance.

File setting limitations

The maximum video settings supported are:

  • Video Resolution: HD 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Audio: 1 Stereo Track
  • File Size: 2 GB
  • Running Time (Duration): 20 minutes

You can verify these in settings in the properties of the file.

To ensure quick loading and to optimize the video for your display pages, video files on Zenfolio are compressed, resized versions of the uploaded video files.

The converted versions of the video will come in its original resolution as well as lower resolution versions. We do not create resolution sizes larger than the original video file.

Zenfolio does not keep the original video file.  This means that if the video is later downloaded, only the converted versions of the video are available to download.

When played back, Zenfolio automatically detects the site visitor's available bandwidth and plays back the video size that allows for the smoothest video playback.

Recommendations and best practices

The best quality and full screen resolution for viewing video online is 1080p (1920x1080 progressive scan frames).

If your video reaches beyond the file size of 2 GB, you may want to try converting the video to use the H.264 codec before uploading the file. Mpeg Streamclip is a free application to both convert and trim your video file. This may also reduce the processing time on Zenfolio before it may be viewed. You may also want to use this application or another video editing program to cut your file down to 20 minutes if necessary.
