How to Mass Edit Photo Metadata using Bulk Update Metadata

When you upload photos, Zenfolio extracts and makes available to you metadata information containing the shooting conditions and equipment used when taking the photograph as well as data you may have added to your photos such as titles, keywords and captions. This metadata information comes from EXIF and IPTC data.

For more information on reading your photos' metadata please click here!

You have the ability to bulk update the metadata associated with the photos in your galleries. This will allow you to edit all of the Titles, Captions, Alt-attributes and Keywords of all images in a group or gallery at once on one screen.
For Zenfolio users that signed up after May 10 2018, please click here for updated instructions using the new Photos Page in the Dashboard.

To bulk update the metadata for the photos you must first select a Gallery or Group in your Dashboard.
  1. In the Dashboard, go to Photos.
  2. Choose the Group or Gallery under the Organizer.
  3. Click Bulk Update Metadata under the Toolbox.

This will open the Bulk Update Metadata panel. Follow the onscreen steps to proceed.
  • Step 1: Download Current Metadata
File names and metadata for all photos and videos in the gallery will be downloaded as a CSV file.
  • Step 2: Update Titles, Captions, and Keywords
Use a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel to update metadata fields.
  • Step 3: Re-Upload CSV
After processing, your photos and videos will reflect the new metadata.

To download the gallery's metadata for editing, follow these steps:
  1. In the Dashboard, go to Photos.

Editing and updating the metadata CSV File

You can edit the downloaded metadata CSV file in a spreadsheet program such as Excel. This will allow you to add and remove data from the cells and to re-upload the file to update the metadata in bulk.

A common use would be to add keywords separated by commas to the cells in the keywords column then saving the CSV file before re-uploading it to your Gallery or Group.

For example, the first few rows of the metadata CSV file for your bulk update might look like this:
File Name Title Caption Copyright Alt attribute Keywords Zenfolio Photo ID [DO NOT EDIT]
class_of_2013-68.jpg Chess   Buteo Photo   1002,Chess 756351529
class_of_2013-69.jpg Christen   Buteo Photo   1003,Christen 886351529
class_of_2013-68.jpg Craig   Buteo Photo   1004,Craig 475635158

(Note: Do Not edit the contents of the Zenfolio Photo ID column - The system requires the information in these cells to identify the photos and to match your metadata appropriately!)
